Products Description
How strong is a graphite rod?
As an important industrial carbon material, medium-coarse grain graphite plays an indispensable role in various high-end manufacturing sectors due to its unique physicochemical properties. Medium-coarse grain graphite rods are manufactured using graphite particles as raw material through a complex series of processes, including extrusion molding, baking, impregnation, and high-temperature graphitization.
Strength is the fundamental attribute of medium-coarse grain graphite rods when used as structural materials; key strength indicators include compressive strength and flexural strength. Performance varies depending on the specific grade and manufacturing process. These strength characteristics enable the rods to withstand mechanical pressure and bending stress, meeting operational requirements across diverse working conditions.
Hardness is a critical parameter for measuring a material's resistance to localized indentation or wear. The hardness of medium-coarse grain graphite rods is typically expressed using the Shore hardness (HS) scale. It is worth noting that graphite is generally classified as a relatively soft material on the Mohs hardness scale (approximately 1.5–3), a system distinct from the Shore hardness scale. This hardness profile means that medium-coarse grain graphite rods offer a balance of wear resistance and ease of precision machining, allowing them to be fabricated into components with complex geometries.
The value of medium-coarse grain graphite rods stems from their array of outstanding properties. First, they exhibit excellent high-temperature resistance, with a melting point as high as 3850°C ± 50°C and minimal material loss in ultra-high-temperature environments. Second, they possess superior thermal shock resistance and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, enabling them to withstand rapid temperature fluctuations without cracking. Furthermore, they offer good electrical and thermal conductivity alongside excellent chemical stability, resisting corrosion from most acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. Leveraging these advantages, medium-coarse graphite rods find applications across a wide range of industrial sectors. In the metallurgical and chemical industries, they are used to manufacture high-temperature-resistant crucibles, furnace linings, conductive electrodes, heat exchangers, and corrosion-resistant equipment components. In the fields of machinery and mold manufacturing, they serve as ideal electrode materials for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) and are used to produce hot-pressing molds, casting molds, and various mechanical parts such as bearings and seals.
Medium-coarse graphite rods play a particularly critical role in high-tech and new energy industries. They are widely utilized in the semiconductor and solar photovoltaic sectors as hot-zone components-such as heaters and heat shields-for monocrystalline silicon furnaces. Additionally, they serve as structural materials and neutron moderators in the aerospace and nuclear industries, and are used as casting molds in the glass and refractory material sectors to improve casting yields.
