In modern aluminum melting processes, graphite rods play a crucial role, primarily acting as an efficient and economical carrier for refining and degassing agents, deeply involved in the purification process of aluminum liquid.

 

The most critical function of graphite rods in the aluminum melting process is degassing and refining. Molten aluminum liquid easily absorbs hydrogen, leading to porosity defects in castings. When an inert gas or a mixture of chloride salts is introduced into the bottom of the aluminum liquid through a hollow graphite rod, the graphite rod acts as a stable delivery and dispersion carrier. The rising tiny bubbles act like a "vacuum cleaner," adsorbing hydrogen and suspended oxide inclusions from the molten metal during their ascent and carrying them to the surface for removal, thereby significantly reducing the gas and impurity content in the aluminum liquid.

 

In addition to physical purification, graphite rods can also play a role in grain refinement and composition adjustment. Manufacturers often use graphite rods to directly introduce specific wire-shaped additives (such as aluminum-titanium-boron wire) into the depths of the molten pool, ensuring uniform melting and dispersion of the additives, effectively refining the grain structure of the aluminum and improving the mechanical properties of the alloy. It also serves as a convenient channel for adding certain alloying elements.

 

Compared to some metal tools, graphite rods offer several advantages. First, graphite rods are chemically stable and do not react violently with the aluminum liquid at high temperatures, avoiding contamination of the molten metal. Second, they possess excellent high-temperature resistance and thermal shock stability, withstanding rapid changes in aluminum liquid temperature without cracking. Furthermore, the inherent lubricity of graphite rods makes operation smoother. From an economic perspective, graphite rods are relatively inexpensive, durable, and have a low overall cost of use.
